grinding gears I woke this afternoon at three in the afternoon, then rolled over and went back to sleep. The next time that I opened my eyes the digital display said four and I rolled over again. When the display read five thirty I decided to stay awake. My body had had enough of what was passing for sleep. My reasoning for doing this was simple. Today was the start of my weekend and I needed to catch up on some lost sleep. Usually I try to get as much of the day as possible on Sunday and go without sleep, but today I changed my mind. The dreary weather outside lent itself to my cause. Blowing wind and a flat gray mass for sky made sleeping seem like a sound idea. I wasn't missing anything worthwhile outside. Once I was awake most of the night was spent watching television since I didn't feel like venturing out for movies. The Simpsons, Zoe, Duncan, Jack and Jane and finally The Practice flickered before my eyes. I've been thinking that if I left third shift I would get my quiet time at night back again. The midnight hour could be a time of reflection instead of half an hour into work for me.
