answer is no Early this morning at work, my boss approached me about possibly working a temporary second shift schedule until they find a replacement for the person leaving. Without any hesitation I said no and kept my reasons brief. As much as other people can not understand third shift, I love it and do not want my hours to change. I have the same amount of free time as a first shift person without the office politics and unnecessary stress. Second shift holds very little appeal for me and I refuse to do it even on a temporary basis. When I got this job, I had a choice between second and third and I chose third and I stand by that decision. The hours that I work give me the freedom to do things that would be lost if I worked second shit. Any possibility of going out at night would be gone. I didn't say that to my boss. What I did say is that I was considering taking some classes later in the year and my schedule was fixed. He understood and said that all that he could do was ask. I know that if I had given in to this appeal, it would have led to regrets later. It will take a long time to fill the position and I don't want something labeled as temporary become permanent. I have seen this happen before and I know better now. He even said that there would no way to say how long this temporary spot would last and I do not want to take the risk for them. Being asked to pick up the slack did not surprise me, because it takes the pressure off of them. In their mind, I am a readily available resource that requires less effort to maintain. The person leaving thought that they might make it more of a seven at night to four thirty in the morning shift, but this option would not appeal to me either. He said that he had worked it earlier here and liked it, because he was able to get to sleep when it was still dark. I, however, think that it would be miserable and didn't even mention it in our conversation. Once I put that behind me, I went home to wait for the new hard drive that I ordered to arrive. Each time that I heard a truck, I would go to the window hoping it was my package. Finally at eleven in the morning, my doorbell was rung repeatedly. When I ran downstairs to open the door, I found my package sitting right outside waiting for me. I guess that must be the new delivery policy and signatures are not required for expensive computer equipment. Of course I couldn't go to sleep without using up my new toy and ended up going to sleep at three in the afternoon.
