Michelangelo sibyl from the Sistine Chapel

day two

Since I am on vacation, I didn't see any reason not to pamper myself. I ordered breakfast from room service. It seemed so much easier than showering and going downstairs to eat. The breakfast was good, which made it even better.

I surprised myself by getting out of my hotel room at ten-thirty. At home I have problems leaving the house before noon on my days off. Here if I waste time, there is a small amount of guilt that goes with it. If I just wanted to lounge around in bed watching television, I could have done that at home. It costs me money to stay here.

Through what the weatherman likes to call coastal fog, I saw the harbor outside my window. They weren't lying when they said I had a view of it. When I rolled in last night, I couldn't really tell what I was looking at outside my window. There was too much mist blocking my vision.

Once in a while I linger on the French channel on the television. For some reason, the children's programs are the most fascinating for me. I guess that I expect adults to be able to speak another language, not children. I know that this doesn't make any sense, but if I heard my three year old niece speaking another language, it would seriously freak me out.

I took the long way to Halifax this morning. Since I couldn't get a hotel reservation in Halifax, I got one in the city across the harbor, Dartmouth. Downtown Halifax is reachable by bridge where I am, but I drove north around the harbor to get to Halifax.

Today was the day that I was going to explore the city. The downtown was where most of the attractions were located, so I made that my target. It was also the area that I had studied the most while I was at home.

It took me a long time to find a place to park. As with most downtowns, space was limited. The drive around the harbor was pleasant with Dartmouth on the east side, Halifax on the west side and Bedford to the north of it.

Three hours of walking the streets of downtown Halifax certainly wore me out. I avoided most of the real tourist traps and stuck to the small stores.

The downtown had the usual assortment of elements. There are shops with over priced clothing. Then there are shops with second hand clothes trying to be hip. Finally mixed in there somewhere are the panhandlers. For being a small city, it still had them.
