Michelangelo sibyl from the Sistine Chapel

movie junkie

The almost double feature from yesterday got me excited about movies again. It was the first time that I had been out to see something since The Phantom Menace and it felt good. Not only did I see some great films, but I also got some great previews to go with them.

Before the Summer of Sam they aired a preview for the Astronaut's Wife with Johnny Depp which looks great. An astronaut goes into space and loses radio contact for a brief amount of time. Then when he returns he isn't quite the same, which seems intriguing enough. Plus whatever Depp does is always a little offbeat and usually works for me.

I know that I kind of glossed over what else appealed to me about Run Lola Run, so I'll try to elaborate a little more today. Visually it was stunning with a mixture of still images, animation and split screens. One review called it a ninety minute music video, but that isn't really accurate or fair. Very few videos that I have seen compare to this film.

I'll admit that the story isn't complex, but we get to see it from three different versions which certainly adds to it. I know that I examine events over and over in my mind and wish that I could explore other options. What if is a very powerful question that sometimes gives enlightening answers. Then again this can also lead to some awful melodrama if used poorly. I, however, like what they with the idea of cause and effect throughout the film. Each and every day of our life, we make choices that effect the rest of our life without truly knowing what will happen because of it.

Even though I didn't wake up sore from the bicycle ride, I opted for swimming today instead. Once I was in the water I knew that I had made the right choice. Somehow the water temperature was warmer than the air temperature which took me by surprise. I can't remember the last time the pool was that warm. It was so relaxing.

Then to round out the end of the day I kicked back on the couch to watch an episode of Nova talking about the Apollo space program. Those men and what they achieved still amazes me and I am looking forward to the thirtieth anniversary of man walking on the moon.
