run lola run No matter how hard I may try, I am never fully awake on Sundays and yesterday was no exception. For a change in routine, I didn't sleep the whole afternoon away. I only slept from about eleven in the morning to two in the afternoon, but I really didn't do that much with my extra time. My mind just couldn't focus on anything for very long. All that I did was start the Nova Scotia entries for the journal. Today, however, was a complete contrast to yesterday. Not only was I able to focus, but I was busy for most of the day. I keep trying to make the days as packed as they were when I was on my trip. Of course this is easier to do on my weekends then on the days that I work. With the return of more reasonable temperautres, I ventured out on my bicycle this morning for the first time in weeks. I tried to keep it simple and just did some meandering through the neighborhood. Now I only hope that I didn't push myself too hard on my first day back out. It is so easy to over exert yourself without even trying and I don't want to wake up tomorrow feeling sore. Early in the afternoon, I took in a matinee of the Summer of Sam. I knew that the subject of the film was the mood of New York during the Son of Sam killings in 1977, but I still wasn't sure what to expect from Spike Lee. Now after seeing the movie, I'm still not quite sure what to think. I liked the cast and thought that they did a great job, but I don't know what Spike Lee was trying to say. Maybe he wasn't trying to saying anything, but just wanted to recreate the feel of New York during that time. After the movie I came home to eat and found that the art prints that I had ordered had been delivered. The entire time that I have been living here the walls have been bare. So I finally decided to buy some reproductions of some of my favorite paintings. The three that I chose were New York Movie by Edward Hopper, Girl with Pearl Earring by Vermeer and Christina's World by Andrew Wyeth. Now it is going to cost me a small fortune to have all three of them framed, but I think that it will be worth it. Soon I was out on the street again on my way to another theater to see Run Lola Run, a German film that I read about on the web. This meant a trip to the east side of Milwaukee where the Oriental Theatre is located. After a few wrong turns, I was sitting in the aptly named theater with Buddha statues completely surrounding me as industrial music played in the background. For me Run Lola Run was a high without the drugs and is now one of my favorite foreign films. I loved it and I'll have to put Springsteen aside for a moment so that I can listen to the German techno soundtrack that was essential to the film. The music and the film meshed together perfectly. One review that I read called it Trainspotting meets Sliding Doors and I think that's a pretty good description.
