office complaints

Last night on the way to work, I caught a glimpse of an orange crescent moon low near the horizon. In a way that was the highlight of my day.

My Tuesday night Wednesday morning at work always starts the same. I have an hour alone with the second shift staff who are usually well on their way to being party central by the time that I get there. I can always tell how much fun they are having by how loud the radio is outside the door to the department.

Last night was a little different though with the piped in music being cranked to high instead of the radio. At first I didn't think too much of it, because they do this every so often and think that it is funny. This time they did it for another reason and I had to laugh. Someone had hidden the radio that they use every night and they couldn't find it.

I remember last week a member of second shift telling me how he managed to get some new stations in on the radio. Normally the only station that comes through clear enough is the local soft rock station that has a very limited playlist.

He was so proud of himself, because he would be able to listen to football games while he worked. With this new option he said that the time would just fly by for him. Now just days later, his dreams of being able to listen to whatever he wanted were taken away from him.

The second shift person in my department said that it was probably management that had either hidden or disposed of the radio. For me I don't really care whether or not the radio is there. Most of the time after second shift leaves, we usually turn the radio down anyway.

There may be times when I criticize work, but I don't see it as a place to party. I mean there is a difference from being relaxed at work to just goofing around all night. For as long as I have worked at places with multiple shifts, second always seem to be the least productive and the most annoying to me.

Second shift seems to be composed of people who can't wake up early enough for a first shift job and who want to be able to make the final hours of bar time. Now I realize that there are exceptions to this generalization, but so often they seem to meet this stereotype.

It wasn't a bad night at work. Actually it was fairly ordinary with most of the early morning hours spent listening to my third shift counterpart from the front half of the week complain about his job. Quite simply he is bored and feels that management is neglecting him. Now I'll be the first to admit that our jobs are not the most exciting, but I think that he added to his current situation. For most of last year and part of this year, he was sucking up to the manager of another department. Then that manager went to first shift and all of his efforts were forgotten.

Heavy cloud cover made for a very laidback kind of day, where sleeping seemed like the best thing to do. It didn't matter that I slept long enough during the day, I just felt like staying on the couch until I had to go to work. There wasn't any urge to leave the house as I watched the clouds drifting slowly by my window, as they must have done while I was sleeping.
