Michelangelo sibyl from the Sistine Chapel

jodi and martha

My sleep today was buffered on both sides by what seemed like hour upon hour of television watching, but I didn't mind. Sometimes a little television is all that I need to pass the time and at the very least it creates some great background noise.

In the morning hours after work, Jodi Applegate and Martha Stewart keep me fascinated. Both of these women strike me as so odd, which probably explains why they are on television, but yet I continue to watch. I've spoken before about Martha and her condescending attitude that never ceases to amaze me, so I'll focus more on Jodi. Something about her overly perky image on Later Today attracts and repels me at the same time. She looks good, but as soon as she starts to talk I wince. I keep wondering to myself how much of what she does is an act and how much is really her true personality. I suppose that if most of it was an act I could tolerate her in person, but if she acted that way for real I would run as fast as I could in the other direction. I can handle the unreal at a distance, but up close and in person would disturb me too much.

Wednesday night is filled with a personal trio of shows that probably defies any real logic. It starts with Dawson's Creek bleeds into Star Trek Voyager and then ends with an episode of Law and Order. I see these as being three very different audience markets, but I watch all of them. Dawson's hyper verbal if not exaggerated dialogue always amuses me. Almost everything that they say on the show becomes a grand outburst of emotion. Then in the afterglow of the warm and fuzzies, I launch into the dying gasps of Star Trek and its view of humanity. Finally I end the night with a return to the world of verbal gymnastics with Law and Order.
