noises off When I left work this morning, it truly looked and felt like winter. Frost clung to car windows and my breath was visible as I walked under a cloud filled sky. The only thing that is missing is snow, but I am sure that will happen soon enough in the coming weeks. At first I was little worried about the play I saw tonight. Most of the articles that I read about it referred to it as a British comedy and for me that could fall anywhere between Benny Hill and Mr. Bean, which is not a good thing. I can not tolerate either of them for very long. Noises Off, however, did work for me. Some of it was a little overdone, but it wasn't Jerry Lewis slapstick either which I find painful. Of the three plays that I've seen this season, this one seemed to have the biggest crowd and I'm not sure why. I always go on a Friday night so it can't have been because of the day of the week. Nor was it the opening night. My best guess is that the play is more popular than I realize. I'm not sure how big of a company they have here at the Milwaukee Rep, but I recognized three of the actors from the Twelfth Night production that I saw a couple of months ago. Instead of being Elizabethan characters, they were just ordinary English actors this time around. Not being overly familiar with the actors makes the play more believable for me. So often people go to see movies to see a certain actor try to be something else, but after a time they simply become themselves in everything that they do. For now at least I find it much easier to accept these people as the characters in the play and not some well known personality. On the other hand, I am starting to appreciate a few members of the troupe and would go to see a play just because they were in it. With three more plays to go in the season, I might try to get a ticket for another play next Friday night to make up for not seeing any in November. If I don't go again this month, my next show isn't until January, when I get to see a production of Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men for the first time.
