anime on stage Seeing the play Friday night was a nice way to spend my time and I wouldn't mind being able to see a different one each week. For being close to three hours of sitting amongst a group of strangers, I can't really find any reason to complain. Plus as an added benefit my reserved seat is in a good location to see who else goes to a play on a Friday night. From looking around at the audience, it would seem that I still fall into the younger end of the spectrum, which isn't that unexpected. I'm not sure how hip seeing plays might be with the under thirty crowd here in Milwaukee. Of course going to a play is much more expensive than a movie, but I think that the difference in cost is worth it. Something about seeing the story happen right in front of you in real time makes anything seen on a flickering screen less enchanting. The story seems more human when the people can look at you. A person can not make eye contact with someone on a movie screen. The human connection makes it so exciting for me. The people on the stage want some kind of reaction from us and it is hard to resist. I'm not sure if I would say that I appreciate all kinds of theatre. I tend to lean more toward the classical and I can't say that I've seen anything that experimental. Of the six plays from this season I would say that most of them fall into this category with Twelfth Night, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men being definite standards. Noises Off is the most modern play that I have ever seen. Before this year, the only plays that I saw were Shakespeare and Dicken's A Christmas Carol. Ever so slowly it is starting to dawn on me that Christmas is nearly here which might sound odd, but I am not one to dwell on the holidays for an entire month. I just don't see the point in it giving in to all of the hype and I find it hard to be excited for that long. I also think that having my birthday in December adds to this feeling. When I was growing up people often said to me that it must be horrible having my birthday so close to Christmas. They believed that people combined my birthday and Christmas gifts, when in fact this never happened. My family and friends kept the two events separate and so did I. A nineteen day gap between the two dates was enough time for me when I was little and it still works now. Earlier this week I had planned on going to see Princess Mononoke, because I discovered that it was showing at one of the arthouse theaters here in Milwaukee. At first Sunday was to be the day, but it didn't happen since I slept too late into the night. Then on Monday when I told Jose, my local anime expert, that I was going to go see it, he handed me a couple of movie passes for the theater. Suddenly I was happy that I had overslept and not gone on Sunday. Now however it isn't listed in the paper anymore. What was going to be my first taste of anime on the big screen was taken from me by not having enough time. Before I fell asleep this afternoon, I decided to take my old computer system out of the desk and replace it with the new one. I was getting tired of seeing it sit on my kitchen table, but this may have not been the best time to do it. Since I was getting tired, I could feel my concentration and patience waning with each passing minute. I think that if I had waited until I had slept, I could have avoided some swearing outbursts. In the end I did get them swapped and it looks good. Now all that I have to do is figure out what I want to do with my old system. Eventually I think that I'll give to my sister Hope, but until then I have to store it somewhere.
