Michelangelo sibyl from the Sistine Chapel

post holiday bliss

Once again details got lost in the last four entries, but I was rather busy and didn't have the time to flesh out any of what I wanted to say. So instead of any real introspection, I ended up posting more of a laundry list of events, which despite being very surface does have some value to me.

Since I did so little to get ready for the holiday season, I have next to nothing to clean up now that everything is over. There isn't a tree to dispose of in the next week or so. Nor are there any lights to take down. I can make the transition to a regular routine much easier than other people. Personally I just want to get past the new year as soon as possible, so that the media can find something else to exploit over and over.

I ventured out into the after Christmas crowds this afternoon only to be confronted with groups of high school students on break. I suppose that I did the same thing when I was their age and it gives them something to do, but there are days when I just can't tolerate them. Maybe this is another sign that I am getting older.

The line at the theater almost made me turn around and go back home, but I didn't. Although after seeing The Talented Mr. Ripley, that may have been the better decision.

The scenery in the film was pleasant enough as was seeing Cate Blanchett in something other than Elizabethan dress, but the rest of the film was so not worth my time. It kept building and building and in the end gave the viewer nothing. Suddenly it occurred to me that that might be the reason as to why the previews for the film were so vague. The story had no substance at all.

I guess that I was expecting some of the romance that was in The English Patient, since this was done by the same director, but that isn't what I saw. Instead of anything happening between either Gwyneth Paltrow and Matt or Cate and Matt, his character only wanted Jude Law. Maybe this was meant to be shocking or edgy, but I found most of it to be dull.

I'm not saying that the film wasn't well acted. I'm just saying that the storyline was less than engaging. It was a movie best seen without the sound.
