Sick Day

So I was really sick this morning.

A fine, violent illness it was, too. About three-thirty this morning I woke up, my stomach cramping, my general attitude one of sleepy queasiness.

"Ah, I'll just go back to sleep, ignore it," I said to myself, rolling over.

Fifteen minutes later I had to make a decision: puke in bed or puke in the bathroom. I chose the bathroom.

After that I'd sleep a while, get up, puke, get back in bed, sleep a bit, vomit....you get the idea. About seven this morning I was sitting in the living room, miserable, trying to psyche myself up for a shower and the trip to work.

I failed utterly and called in sick.

It's been a while since I actually called in sick. At my last job sick days and vacation days all ran together and when you needed a day off you used one or the other, depending on what you had. I had to go back a couple of jobs to think of an actual sick sick day: I had muscle spasms in my shoulders so bad I actually couldn't get out of bed. I literally could not get to work. That's reasonable, don't you think? Since then, I've always gone to work and scheduled doctor's appointments in the afternoon.

Not today, though. I was sick as a dog this morning, so I did not go to work. Simple.

It was a pretty sad sick day, really. I slept all morning, ate a little food (which settled my stomach nicely), played a little Sega, watched a little TV (really just the Teletubbies, first thing this morning) - it was a gorgeous day outside, too. Warm with low humidity, an early-fall/late-summer day if ever there was one. And I've been out in it for maybe ten minutes, total.

It really sucks that our end-of-the-century work ethic will only allow us to take a day off when we're too sick to make it to work, you know? I wish I could have taken a sick day and gone out to run and play, but no - I had to lay on the couch all day. I've got, like, 137 sick days, too, but my employer frowns on using sick days for non-sickness. Not that they'd know, I know, but I do have some ethics. Not many, but some.

In other news, I haven't run in over a week. And I'm running a 4-miler next Friday. I will train hard between now and then, barring another puking fit like this morning. And I do feel better now than I did this morning; hopefully this thing has run its course.

And since Monday not dick has happened of interest. Now you know.
