So I'm at Shangri-La this afternoon, doing a little browsing, and they're playing this cool record that I think I may have heard a tune off of before.
I walk over to the counter. "Is this the Clears?" I ask.
"Yeah, it is," the guy says, "maybe you can help me. There was this guy, a solo guy, who was a big new wave artist. He's done lots of stuff over the years but he was big in the eighties...and he sounds a lot like the Clears. He's a big influence on them. Any idea?"
"Gary Numan?" I guessed.
"Yeah! That's it! Great!" he went around the corner to talk to another customer, "it's Gary Numan, man!"
"Yeah!" the other guy said.
Then I checked out. The other guy was talking to me.
"So who else would you recommend that makes music like that?" he asked me.
"Um...Peter Murphy solo, like Deep, Soft Cell, early Duran Duran - they've all got that sound."
"Yeah, I've been really in to the early eighties bands lately," he said.
This amused me. I remembered these bands from the first time around - this guy was still working on potty training then.
For all my help the guy working there gave me lots of cool stickers along with my purchase. You just can't have an interesting experience like that at Wherehouse or someplace like that.
Shangri-La rules!
Hey! Trish! Siobhan! You rock with your awesome linkage! Go, girlfriend!
