Michelangelo sibyl from the Sistine Chapel

titus andronicus

Perhaps in an effort to balance out all of the non-activity of yesterday, most of today was spent on the run doing various chores. After a somewhat slow start I had been to the laundromat and done some clothes shopping before noon. Then after a quick lunch I was back on my way to the movies to see a matinee of Titus.

For some unknown reason the larger chain of theaters here has decided to start showing what I consider to be arthouse movies. Oh, they still start out in the arthouse theaters on the other side of town, but eventually they end up in one of the bigger theaters near me. Personally I think that this is great and I hope that the trend continues for a long time.

Titus Andronicus is one of the few Shakespeare plays that I have not read, but I had heard that the plot was grim and the movie certainly was true to that aspect. Visually it has to be the most striking thing that I have seen at the movies in a long time, but by the time that the movie ended I was feeling utterly numb from all of the violence. Something about seeing Lavinia having her hands cut off and then having twigs shoved into the bleeding stumps was disturbing. Despite all of the killings, I found all of the mixing of various time periods throughout the movie to be mildly interesting. Most of the reviews that I read hated it though.

Besides buying some new clothes this morning, my other major purchase was six travel guides from the local used bookstore. I had scanned prices of some guides online and I was a little hestitant to buy them, so I think that I got some real bargains this afternoon. Oh, they may be a year or two old, but I think that most of the maps and information should still be accurate or at least that is what I am hoping.

...

To usher out all of the warm weather that we have been having here, we were treated to some summer thunderstorms today. The first downpour happened while I was at the laundromat and the second more violent system rumbled through when I was hanging out with Jose and Steve.
