metal on bone Unlike yesterday I didn't wait for the day to wind down before I started doing things. In fact I was pretty active right from the very beginning and that momentum carried on through the rest of the day. Because I kept busy doing things, the need to be self-destructive that I mentioned yesterday went away. There just wasn't any time to feel that way. There were two things that I didn't do that I wanted to do. One of them was researching my Europe trip and the other one was painting. ... I went to the dentist this morning for the first time in probably five years and I have to say that it went better than I had expected. Yes, I know that five years is a long time, but when my old family dentist retired I didn't know who to go to next. I guess that I could have went with his successor, but there were other circumstances as well that prevented me from going to anyone new. If I remember correctly my social life was pretty eventful at the time and my teeth seemed fine. Now I know that this is crude and slightly sexist, but I have to say that my new dentist is hot. She looks good. Of course my last dentist was probably near seventy and had that older man smell to him so there isn't any real comparison. I also doubt that having an attractive woman stare at the inside of my mouth is a good way to find a new girlfriend. Something bothers me about this concept of tartar and plaque. What I want to know is this something caused by our modern diet or did our ancestors just have encrusted teeth and didn't know better. Maybe the ones with bad teeth rotted away so the only skulls that we have left to examine are the ones where people had good teeth. So often I see dentistry as being one of the more archaic forms of medicine that we have around today, because most of the tools that they use seem so primitive to me. Just the idea of taking a metal pick and scraping against bone makes me shiver, but that is exactly what they do. Today, however, they used some more advanced technology to speed up my cleaning. Instead of the metal pick, they used a high pitched sonic beam to remove the plaque from the back of my lower teeth. Every so often I would hear and feel the shriek echo in my head, but I guess that it was better than listening to her scrape for an hour. ... After the visit to the dentist I went over to Half Price Books and walked away with sixty dollars worth of stuff. In my haul I came away with four novels, two art books and two maps. Two of the novels were by people that I knew and the other two were by people that I heard about but had never read. As for the maps, they were for two cities that I'll be in staying when I go to Europe in July. Most of the stuff was what I consider impulse buying, but after spending about an hour and a half at the dentist's office I felt that I deserved it. ... Then to end my day I took some of my plants that were in need of transplanting and moved them both into larger pots. The larger of the two plants was easier to get out of the pot compared to the smaller one. The roots of the smaller plant had a serious grip on the bottom and made it next to impossible to get out of the pot. The larger one came loose after a few smacks on the bottom of the pot. Yes, I like plants in my house. I always have liked them and I also do a good job of keeping them healthy.
