some work news

My next door neighbor cuts his lawn with an old fashioned mechanical mower. Part of me finds this to be quaint, but the sound that the blades makes is oddly disturbing to say the least. To me it sounds as though he were dragging metal across ice. The scraping noise is almost more annoying than the roar of a gas powered lawnmower.

The first time that I heard or saw him cutting the lawn, I though that his motivation was to be environmentally friendly. I was wrong in thinking so, because after he has finished with the pushmower, he comes back out with a weed trimer.

...

Work surprised me again this morning. Before I left my boss had a quick informal meeting with me and the other half of the third shift staff. Once again he stressed the fact that the long promised applications would be soming soon. This wasn't what surprised me though. It was what he said to me after my counterpart walked away.

It seems that starting with this paycheck I would have a salary increase. My review had been months ago and I had pretty much forgotten about the whole thing. Naturally this increase pales in comparison to what I might get if I left the company, but I'm not complaining. To be blunt, I'm not quite ready to leave yet. I still want to get another sweet vacation out of this company before I do go.

...

The overall mood at work has been rather subdued. When we first walked in we were quietly told that a member of second shift had commited suicide. Now this would be sad enough except for the fact that almost two years to the day another person from the same department did the same thing. It made people sit and wonder for a while about the company as a whole and the effect that it has on its employees.
