snakes on bridges

In an attempt to break my usual routine I went for a thirty mile bike ride late this morning. I did not originally intend to go that far, but knowing that I would have the wind at my back on the return trip I decided to push myself. Besides I felt good and was maintaining a steady pace despite pedalling into the wind and uphill most of the way out.

However, the way that my rear felt on the way back, a twenty mile trip might have been a better choice. I couldn't wait for the crushed gravel to change back over to the paved stretch of the trail. Thoughts of getting a gel seat for the bike to replace my current one filled my mind constantly.

The trail itself is one those made from an old railroad line. So sometimes it passes near a town and other times it cuts through a completely rural area with nothing around. Beneath blue grey bottomed clouds I saw dry cornfields, a quarry and the backyards of numerous houses.

The newness of the trail was good for me. I've driven by parts of it many times, but this was the first time that I had actually riden it with my bike. Besides I had to go somewhere different, because the only scenery that I see around my house are the women joggers and they're not always there.

The oddest part of the ride were the snakes sunning themselves on the bridges. I accidently rode over the first one that I saw, but managed to avoid the rest of them. To me the partly cloudy sky didn't give off that much heat, but then again I'm not a snake.

Compared to the ride, the rest of the day was fairly calm. I had my physical activity for the day and stuck to less strenuous things like reading and cleaning.
