20 October 2000 That afternoon incident yesterday with party girl really isn't that uncommon of an event for me. Quite often people that I may or may not know start telling me their life story without any prompting on my part. It doesn't bother me. I just find it kind of interesting and it makes me wonder what kind of vibe I must put out to draw these people to me. I don't think that I could handle a party girl as a girlfriend anymore. Most of that lifestyle is well into my past. I like to take better care of my body now. She said that she was wondering why she was still doing it at twenty-five and I couldn't give her an answer. I didn't bother to mention that the last time that I did some serious drinking was back in Amsterdam this past July. Some information is better left kept to myself. Actually the first night that I was there, I was drinking Red Bull instead of alcohol. At the time I really didn't know what was in the drink, but it seemed to work well with the pot that I was smoking. For some reason my brother had suggested it and I thought that I would give it a try. It wasn't until I read an article in Time magazine a few weeks ago that I finally learned what was in Red Bull. From what I read it's more of a pseudo health drink than anything else. ... Tonight was the first time that I had ever since a live production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. To be blunt I am not overly fond of the play, because I see it as being much too over the top. I guess when it comes to Shakespeare I prefer tragedy to comedy, because the writing is usually much better. I'll never forget a friend of mine who once compared Shakespeare comedies to episodes of Three's Company and that image has always stuck with me. Oh, I didn't know that you liked that person. I thought that you liked this other person. Insert laugh track here. Despite all of those feelings, I still enjoyed the show and I am glad that I went. Now I can also say that I have seen Macbeth (twice), Othello, Hamlet, As You Like It, Twelfth Night and A Midsummer Night's Dream. The set was minimal yet effective. The costumes for the faerie folk were modern yet exotic. Oberon had multi-colored dreadlocks and thigh high leather boots while Puck looked like Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers with his tattered pants. Titania and Cobweb were just as interesting in their own way with their apparel. Both of them seemed to be trailing fabric everywhere that they went. The two of them could have given some fashion tips to Hermia and Helena, both of whom looked like they were scullery maids instead of Athenian noble women. Naturally the actor who did Nick Bottom took it to excess and left me feeling a little annoyed by the end of the show. Now I know that he is supposed to be one of the highlights of the comedy, but at the same time it still grinds on me. As for Puck, he had a habit of either mumbling his lines or over exaggerating them to the point of being unintelligible. Somehow I seem to have a habit of having loud people sitting behind me when I go to see a live show somewhere. This time it wasn't a drunk, but the sounds were just as unusual. At first both my sister and I thought that some woman was choking, but then it kept on happening every so often. Then we realized that the sounds were probably coming from a handicapped person with some kind of breathing problem. We weren't the only people wondering what was going on behind us. When the intermission started and the lights went up, more than one person in front of us turned around and looked. It was at this point that we started to feel for the poor woman. It was fine line between pity and understanding. After the show, we grabbed some fast food and I had just enough time to inhale it before I went to work. What this meant is that I went to work for the first time all year wearing nice clothes. My usual mode of attire is jeans and a long sleeved shirt of some sort, preferably logo free, which is acceptable at night, but not the standard business look. Tonight however I looked like office boy with the khaki pants and collar less button shirt. More than one person commented on it, including both Ann and Nicole. Not only did Ann comment on it, but she also itemized each piece of the ensemble down to the shoes. Ann was very happy with the Dido cd that I had gotten her for her birthday. Since none of the speakers in our department work, I brought in a cd player for her to listen to it before she went home for the night. Soon she had the music cranked and was lost in her own little world. From listening to what both Ann and my sister said, it seems that Dido is rising in popularity due to Eminem, which I find to be amusing. I first heard Dido over a year ago, long before the show Roswell started or Eminem came along. Actually I have never even heard an Eminem song and they had to explain the connection between the two singers. I'm too busy submerging myself in Travis, James and Radiohead to be listening to what they play on the radio.
