something country please Monday seems to be the unofficial day for it to snow here in Milwaukee. Last week Monday fourteen inches of the white stuff fell, while today nine inches came down from the sky. I guess that there is something to be said for not having to work on Mondays. Once again I could watch everything happen from the comfort of my livingroom. ... Rather than reading something for class today like I did last week when it snowed, the entire day was mine to do with as I saw fit. It still seems strange to free of something that was there for the past four months. I miss it. Of course there are still others things that I need to do in regards to school. There is the small matter of paying my tuition bill for next semester and I still have to file some more paperwork with the college to get myself further along in the program. ... I have a small confession to make and it even surprises me when I say it. I think that I am starting to like the music of the Dixie Chicks, because part of the day was spent downloading as many of their songs as I could. I have no idea how this happened either. Actually to be honest I know quite a few country songs. When I was little my parents were heavily into Crystal Gayle, Loretta Lynn, Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. All of them made it on to my parents mix tapes that we listened to when we went on our summer vacations across the country. Now this was before the dawn of the walkman so we were forced to listen to whatever they decided to play on the car stereo. I think that I should also mention that these mix tapes were done on eight track and not cassette. Over and over these songs were pounded into my head with nowhere for me to escape. Thankfully I have yet to ever actually buy a country album. Now that I think back, a couple of old girlfriends liked to listen to country songs once in a while and naturally some of that also rubbed off on me. Tracy would waver back and forth between White Zombie, Nine Inch Nails and some odd country tune that was completely foreign to me. Then Brenda was a big fan of Shania Twain, which I tolerated the best that I could. To be honest I think that the Dixie Chicks have much more talent than Shania. The three of them can actually sing while I am convinced that most of Twain's following comes from her looks and the efforts of her husband. Then again maybe I just prefer the harmony over the faux anger stuff that Twain pumps out. More than once Brenda would say to me that she didn't think that Twain liked men. Now I'm not saying that I like all of the Dixie Chicks stuff. Some of their fast pace songs are more painful than I can possibly describe. Nor do I see myself wearing big belt buckles or driving a pickup truck any time soon.
