no nicole around Saturday night Sunday morning was a nice contrast to my Friday night Saturday morning. Quite simply it was calm and I could relax. About the only downside to the night was that I didn't get to see or even talk with Nicole before my weekend started. ... Back to the world of anime, Vampire Hunter D has to be on the other end of the spectrum from Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis. There may have been some killing in Metropolis, but it wasn't nearly as graphic as what Vampire Hunter offered. I couldn't keep up with the body count, nor did I try. Instead of 1940's style comic strip characters that were almost huggable in terms of appearance, emaciated figures draped either in robes or armor were all that I saw in Vampire. Then again Vampire was written now as opposed to fifty years ago so the approach is much different. Plus there is the genre switch from science fiction to science fantasy. Most of the story made sense to me, but I have yet to figure out why D has a face in the palm of his left hand that talks to him and eats spells. It might take another viewing or two to get the answer to that question. Both of them had their strengths, but I think that Vampire Hunter had a more solid story. Metropolis was heavy on effects, but left me wondering why I should care about any of the characters in the story. Even the animators said that the story was incomplete. ... On another pop culture front, California Dan somehow managed to see the new Spiderman movie and loved it. He said that it was completely faithful to the books minus the fact that the webbing comes out of his hands instead of mechanical web shooters, which Joe Public wouldn't know anyway unless they had read the book. The main cast of characters acted the way that they should and even the Green Goblin made sense in the film. Even better was the fact that there was characterization and not just action. I still have my doubts, but I might go see it this Friday. Of course the other big movie event on the horizon would be Episode II: Attack of the Clones, which Dan is dreading if not downright hating without even seeing it. As for me I have even lower expectations for this one than I did Episode I. ... Public television had a great documentary on the White House and I was surprised to learn how many times it has been renovated in its history. I knew that it had been burned by the British at one time, but I didn't know about the changes that the various presidents made to the building. ... Spending hours in my cd player is Caitlin Cary's While You Weren't Looking. It's good to see the other half of Whiskeytown doing something great in music.
