mindless summer acts

Saturday nights at work are supposed to be slow, but that was not the case last night. It was non stop problems for me until I left this morning. I was so busy that I didn't take a lunch break which is very unusual for me. Normally I need that small amount of time to decompress and remember that their is a world outside of work. Those forty five minutes were missing from last night and I used them at the end of the day by going home that much earlier. That last part was a welcome change of pace.

I didn't have a chance to speak with Nicole, but her fiance told me all about his week in the wilderness of northern Wisconsin. Most of the state is fairly well known to me, but he had been some place that I haven't so that was interesting. He was at some man made lake that they recreate every year. The electric company was behind this engineering marvel and it made me think of the Tennessee Valley Authority.

From what he told me it sounded as though he had a great time. Now I have to wonder how well he'll readjust to being back home with Nicole and son. He won't be with the boys anymore and she seemed to be doing okay without him around. As I said the other day she wasn't too eager for the return of the wilderness man, but we will see what happens.

...

Driving home never felt so good as it did this morning. The sun was still tolerable and the roads were devoid of traffic. Before I got home I made a stop at the grocery store and saw something that really struck me as odd. From what I could tell they were doing an inventory of the store and what I saw was so unnatural.

Dozens of people in identical tee shirts or maybe it was polo shirts, it doesn't matter, were furiously keying in numbers on these small pads that hung at waist level. They almost reminded me of the child clones from Episode II. None of them seemed to be thinking about what they were doing and they might as well have been machines.

Now I realize that data entry is a mindless task, but seeing that many people standing around all doing the same thing was disturbing.

...

According to my horoscope this should have been a stellar day for me, but it wasn't. Here is what it said:

High intelligence and good luck sweep you in the direction of your choice today, Sag. You won't disappoint whoever is watching you, even if they're expecting a show. All eyes are upon you as you take the next unfamiliar step, but miraculously you don't feel nervous. If only everything was this easy! Enjoy your spot in the limelight while it lasts -- you'll get a lot of mileage out of this for the next few days.

I don't see how I could have been in the spotlight when I didn't speak with anyone else after I left work this morning.

...

Maybe in an effort to see if what my horoscope had predicted for me would come true, I woke after a mere four hours of sleep. Now looking back I don't think that that was quite enough. Most of the day was spent in a haze and I was back asleep by ten thirty at night. I guess that the day went okay, except that I was expecting something a little better.
