horror and war

Last week Friday at work someone gave me a garbage bag full of comic books. Yes, I said a garbage bag and that was the only thing in there so I didn't mind the packaging. It did take me by surprise though when we went to his car to get them. I was expecting them to be in a box of some sort or maybe a paper bag.

Months ago he had told me that he would bring them in for me and I said that that would be great. Actually I had thought that he had forgotten about them since he never mentioned them again.

Looking through someone else's collection even a small one is always interesting to me, because I have no idea what motivates other people to choose what books to read. Oh, there were some obvious choices such as Batman and Superman, but the rest of the pile was very mixed.

Once I started sorting them I found a large amount of horror books that included some of DC's House of Mystery and Marvel's Adventure into Fear, neither of which are in my collection. The House of Mystery issues with their Kaluta covers caught my eye and I could see how they were the predecessors to Gaiman's Sandman years later. As for the Marvel version of horror I had seen Morbius in a Spiderman book, but I had never read anything where he was the lead character.

The second odd genre in the collection or one that I don't usually follow was the war comics. Sgt. Rock was there and so was The 'Nam, both of which I remember but never felt the need to read when they were popular years ago. To me the genre seemed too limited and I was never that much into guns.

Eventually I calculated in my head what I thought was a reasonable price for what he was offering me. There were a few hidden gems mixed in that I wanted and even though they were clearly battered and far from mint condition I still knew that they would make for great reading material. He seemed happy with what I gave him and I transferred the now vaguely sorted lot into a box for easy carrying.

Personally I thought that it was a great way to start the night. Sadly it was so busy that I didn't even get to read one of them during my shift.
