concert last night

Yesterday didn't end with me spending time with my family. From my perspective the night was just as busy as the day had been and once my parents got home from their meeting, I headed east again to downtown Milwaukee for a concert.

A few weeks ago, I had found out about the concert by accident. When leaving a play to go home, I had noticed a poster near the theater saying that the Cowboy Junkies were coming to town and immediately decided that I had to get some tickets. Last night was when they came to play and I was there to see them for the very first time.

It was a decade ago when I first heard The Trinity Session and the voice of Margo Timmins. As with most people who like their music, it was their rendition of the Velvet Underground song Sweet Jane that drew me to them. At the time they had a sound that was unlike anything being heard on the radio. Okay, maybe I should say college radio, because to this day I don't think that I have ever heard them on a regular pop station.

Finally seeing them perform live didn't disappoint me and I wonder why I waited as long as I did to see them. Of the dozen or so albums that they've made over the years, I own half and I can't say that for too many bands. Plus there were a key part of my collection during my college years and most of that music still holds great memories if not meaning for me.

For the most part the concert was very low key with little detract from the music, which for me was why I was there. When I go to see a concert now, I'm not there to see an event filled with a state of the art light show and elaborate stage decorations. Nor I am there to sweat the night away through dancing. I just want to hear the music and that is what I got.

I'll be the first to admit that the band may not be the most energetic group of people on stage and they themselves don't deny that fact. As Margo put it, they were going to stay seated for the first forty five minutes and play an acoustic set and then take a twenty minute break. After the break she said that some of them might stand, but that the rest of the band would stay seated and that is exactly what they did. Personally I didn't mind what they did on stage, because being able to hear Margo's voice fill the hall was more than enough to make me happy. Personal favorites such as Black Eyed Man and Cause Cheap Is How I feel were highlights of the set for me along with Lost My Driving Wheel.

Having over a decade's worth of material to draw upon, I think that they covered most of their career, which I appreciated. Some bands have a tendency to focus on the new album that they are promoting and add a couple of their more popular songs for an encore. The Cowboy Junkies didn't fall into that category and in addition to what I knew, they also debuted a few songs that may or may not appear on an album that will be released next spring and I'll probably look for it when it does come out.
