lara and yuri

With the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings busy chasing one another up and down the field tonight, Jennifer Garner and the rest of the cast of Alias didn't make a television appearance here on the local ABC station. I didn't know that this was going to happen and started looking for something else to watch since watching the game wasn't an option for me.

I was on the phone as I was changing channels. With the sound turned off so that I could focus more on what was being said to me than what was on the television, it was a woman with a Russian fur hat that caught my attention. Since I couldn't hear the dialogue all that I could do was focus on the actors and the sets. Then it dawned on me what I was watching. Instead of elaborate double crosses in the world of modern espionage, I stumbled across a new version of Doctor Zhivago on PBS and it was a nice change of pace.

The actor playing Yuri was unknown to me, but I instantly recognized Sam Neill as Komarovsky and he seemed to be enjoying the role. Rod Steiger in the David Lean version always impressed me so maybe that was what inspired Sam to give it a try. The woman playing Lara wasn't familiar to me until I did a search online and found out that she was Keira Knightley, who I had seen earlier in the summer in The Pirates of the Caribbean. To me she wasn't on the same level as Julie Christie, but I'm not sure who I would want to see in that role today.

Despite the new faces in the roles, I immediately recognized some familiar scenes. I saw Lara being seduced by Komarovsky, which included the part of her having to model a dress that he bought for her to wear. Then her shooting Komarovsky at a Christmas party where Yuri and Tonya were in attendance quickly followed this scene.

The worst part for me was that I had missed the beginning to see if there had been any kind of voiceover introduction. Hopefully I'll be able to see the second part next week and get a better idea of what they did with the novel.

It was raining when I left work this morning and it was still raining when I returned to work tonight. As far as I know it was that way all day long and is supposed to stay that way for the next few days. Personally I don't mind the rain, because it makes for ideal sleeping weather.
