magnetic siren song

Early this morning I watched my Globe Trekker Destination China DVD. There are two episodes on the disc with Megan McCormick hosting one segment while the ever lovely Justine Shapiro does the other one. Neither of them talks about Hong Kong or Beijing, where I am going to be next year, but that doesn't bother me. Seeing any part of China still interests me.

The amount of history in that country still amazes me and the Cultural Revolution couldn't destroy all of it.

Having read the first two years of Peter David's run on Aquaman, I am very impressed with what he did and am wondering why he left the book. I know that he started writing Supergirl for DC at the same time, but that can't have been his primary reasoning for leaving the book. Maybe he wanted to do something different or he had said all that he wanted to say with the characters. Hopefully there will be answer to my question in the later issues of his run.

Putting aside the question of why David left the book, I have to say that he took what is generally seen as a second tier DC character and made him come alive. If the man on the street has any knowledge at all of Aquaman, he would know him as the guy who swims and talks to fish. That description is far from flattering and is used as a running joke in the book.

A recent issue of The New Yorker had a two page article on the singer Nellie McKay that was fascinating. It was the first time that I had ever heard her name mentioned and after reading the article I wanted to know more about her or at least get another opinion. Then when I went to her site I saw that she is touring with Alanis and the Barenaked Ladies. At first I thought that either she must be impressing them or this could just be a label grouping.

Now having listened to the tracks David and Inner Peace by Nellie McKay, I can see why she is being grouped with the Barenaked Ladies and or Alanis. Her songs are satirical angry yet sound pop like at the same time. You can hum your anger.
