papua new guinea

From watching the French film Ridicule, I've gotten the impression that scathing insult was the means of power in eighteenth century France prior to the revolution. As to whether or not this was true doesn't matter in the end. There was enough character interest to keep me sitting through the movie waiting for the happy ending.

...

After seeing tonight's episode of Globe Trekker, Papua New Guinea is not on my list of places to see before I die. To be fair it wasn't on my list before I saw the episode, but what I saw didn't impress me enough to make me want to go there anytime soon. Now maybe if I were Australian and lived a mere three hours away, it would be worth the trip, but that isn't the case.

For some strange reason I expect the destination at the other end of a flight in excess of fourteen hours to be something special. By special I don't mean some place where crime is high and the concept of tourism is foreign. Maybe this makes me sound old, but I don't need that much adventure in my life when I go abroad. I guess that I want to see the world, but that doesn't mean that I want to put my life in jeopardy while doing it.

In all of my traveling I've only stayed with local people twice and one of those was considered a farm stay in a modern country. The experience was not that unusual. There was running water and the food was something that I recognized. Part of me can understand the need to get beyond the tourist element when seeing a country, but at the same time there is something to be said for having a look around first before making that kind of step.
