norse underworld vision I neglected to mention what was for me the best part of the movie The Cuckoo besides the language barrier problem that didn't seem to bother the principals that much. Towards the end of the film, there is a sequence where the Finnish soldier is dying and we the viewer see him walking in the land of the dead. All of the colors are muted and the only two people in the shot are the solider and this blonde ten-year-old boy dressed in white leading him away. To me it made perfect sense. Having some knowledge of Norse mythology I know that the land of the dead is not fire and brimstone but more of a bleak landscape. Then again I could be mixing images from Marvel Comics Thor with what I know of the Norse underworld. I also remember something about a giant wolf and in the movie the Lapp woman pretends to be a wolf calling him back from the dead. I found the whole sequence to be very interesting if not literary. Trying to bring a lover back from the dead is a common motif in many myths and legends. ... My recent fog of depression lifted today after work and that made my day. Feeling like myself again I was able to thoroughly enjoy reading some issues of both Y The Last Man and Legion Lost. |
