christian cyrano roxanne

Tonight was another first for me in the world of live theater. After years of knowing the story in various forms, I finally saw a production of Cyrano performed onstage and I was happy with what I saw. In my opinion the production was far from standard in its execution and that made the performance even more memorable.

In the space of an hour and a half with no intermission a cast of three, two men and one woman, brought this simple comedy of love to life. The way that the play started was my first indication that the play was going to be anything but straightforward. All three of the actors came onstage in regular clothing and proceeded to change into costume in front of the audience and I thought that it was a nice touch. Then as the play moved forward costume changes would quietly be done off to the side of the stage in almost full view of the audience. I could clearly see the actors undressing and choosing their next piece of wardrobe from a rack of costumes.

Not only was the audience witness to the costume changes, but also got to see the actors move the props onstage around for the various scenes. Once again it was a nice touch.

I have no idea how challenging this approach and or technique of putting on a play might be for the actors, but it was fun for me.
