hail queen margot

Even though I suspect that most people hate them, historical dramas have a certain appeal for me. Examples of the genre that have become personal favorites of mine over the years would include Doctor Zhivago, Elizabeth and The Last Emperor. I have seen all three of those films many times and they never lose their impact. The careful combination of history and high drama plus elaborate costumes and exotic locales are more than enough entertainment for me. Now I can add Queen Margot to that list. French history is not an active hobby of mine, but the movie certainly kept my interest with its ever shifting loyalties and the various factors quest for power.

Besides a great story, the actors in Queen Margot were amazing. Isabelle Adjani who played the title character was new to me, but Daniel Auteuil was someone that I had seen in the French film Un Coeur En Hiver. The beard and tussled hair of his character Henry of Navarre almost threw me off, but his eyes and the mole on his face were still very recognizable. Despite his importance to the film, it was Isabelle who really made the movie work for me. The impression that I get from watching the movie is that Margot was a woman who knew what she wanted in life and made the most of it. I would have loved to have met her if I was alive at that time.
