planet mongo awaits In an effort to add some much needed fun and or comedic relief to my life, I've been watching some low budget science fiction. Escapist fiction in small does is fine with me and I had a couple of choices in mind. Naturally for me my first choice was the British classic Doctor Who which kept me awake many a Sunday night some twenty years ago. Seeing Tom Baker and Mary Tamm searching for the segments that will form the Key to Time made me smile this morning. The special effects were sad, but that never mattered that much to me because Tom was so fun to watch and Mary was a great foil for him. Here is the description of the episode that I saw: "The third installment of the "Key to Time" series brings the Doctor and Romana to Earth at an ancient stone circle -- the Nine Travelers. During their investigation, they uncover a spaceship trapped in hyperspace hovering over the circle. It seems the stones themselves are silicon-based organisms that need globulin to live -- hence the blood sacrifice involving the spaceship's crew." Besides Doctor Who, I rented the very first episodes of the Flash Gordon serial from 1936 and from what I have seen so far I love them. Yes, the special effects are even more sad compared to Doctor Who, but once again that doesn't matter. Where else can I see Dale Arden and Princess Aura running around in halter tops and long butt hugging skirts? Apparently the attire for women on the planet Mongo resembles something with an Arabian nights flair and I don't mind. Personally I am surprised to see so much sex appeal for something that debuted nearly seventy years ago. Each episode is twenty minutes long and makes for some great viewing when I am sitting down to eat something. Plus I suspect that once I've made my way through the series, I'll have to get a copy of the Alex Raymond strips that provided the source material for the serials. |
