catherine and anne Despite being very tired, work was quite nice to me last night and as a result of that kindness, I walked out the door this morning feeling happy. My weekend was here and I was ready for it. Waiting for me at home was plenty of reading material and two new movies from Netflix. I don't think that I could have asked for a better start to my three days off. ... The Great Gatsby has been a favorite novel of mine for years so when I found out that another film version of the story had been made not that long ago, I decided that I had to see it. I've seen the Robert Redford and Mia Farrow version a number of times, but Mia as Daisy has never impressed me. Nor was I happy with Bruce Dern as Tom. For me the only recognizable face in this new production was Mira Sorvino as Daisy and I liked her more than I did Mia Farrow in the same role. Both her age and her looks were closer to my mental image of the character. As for the actors playing the men, I liked the Nick and Tom choices, but the actor playing Jay seemed off to me for some reason and I missed Redford in the role. I think that my love of the book has more to do with the way Fitzgerald uses words than the era itself. All of the cliches associated with the 1920's drive me insane. I have no love of the Charleston, speakeasies or the image of the Flapper. I also suspect that for the majority of America that lifestyle of excess was not a reality, but I could be wrong. ... A teaser trailer for the movie Revenge of the Sith has been released and I must confess that I've watched it a number of times. Now even though I made an effort to see it, I'm not expecting that much from this final film. Lucas has disappointed me twice and I doubt that that trend is going to change with this third film. Despite all of my misgivings about the film, I know that I'll still see it in the theater. Being able to see Darth Vader again on the big screen is reason enough to be there. Plus both Natalie Portman and Ewan McGregor do their best as Amidala and Obi Wan. Those three reasons are enough to give Lucas a little more of my money even though he doesn't really deserve it and or need it. I probably shouldn't be, but I was amazed at the amount of information out on the web having to do with this film. In fact I read the entire script of the movie and know how Lucas ties everything together. Plus if that isn't enough for me, there are scripts for episodes seven through nine for me to read. ... The Six Wives of Henry VIII was on television tonight and I was compelled to watch it. English history has always intrigued me and the Tudor dynasty is filled with more drama than any modern day political family that I can think of at the moment. Plus I never thought that it was going to air on television again and had just recently added the DVD to my Amazon wish list so this repeat airing was an odd coincidence to me. |
