the avengers finale I can't remember the last time that I went to visit with my parents at their new home, but I have a feeling that it was over a month ago if not longer. So in an effort to make up for my recent absence and at their request, I spent a large part of this afternoon at their place just sitting around and talking. It was nice and I'll probably stop out again next week. While I was there, I not only got to hear the latest batch of family stories that had happened since I last saw them, but I also got to see all of the changes that they have made to their place both inside and out. For example, the last time that I was there, the landscape crew was just starting to plant some shrubbery. Now they not only have shrubs along the side of the house, but they also have a lawn and some trees. Unlike like twenty years ago, they weren't ready for nature to transform their yard from plain dirt to something a little more green. ... Despite my dislike of the controversial Chaos story that brought the current volume of The Avengers to a close, I bought a copy of Avengers Finale early this evening at the local comic shop. Thanks to the internet I had a good idea of what was going to happen, but I still had to see firsthand what Bendis thought was a proper ending to such a long tradition. As for my thoughts on what he delivered, the short answer would be that I was not impressed. The art had its moments, but the story was forced and unemotional. I will readily admit that the book had been stale for some time before he came on board, but I'm not sure that justifies completely ending the book so that Marvel can issue a new number one. Plus the addition of Spider Man and Wolverine to the team is blatant marketing contrary to anything Bendis might say. From a business point of view, it might make good sense to use two of the most widely recognized characters in the same book, but from a creative angle I see it as stupid. The Avengers was for people who didn't like Spider Man or read his books. Now that option has been eliminated. Hopefully in a year or so Bendis will tire of The Avengers and someone else will take over the writing chores. |
