monthly shipment arrived Since yesterday was a holiday, my monthly shipment of books didn't arrive until today, but I didn't mind because there was still plenty of time to read some of them before I left for work. Besides as long as I get them on my weekend I am happy. The latest issue of Mike Carey's Lucifer was what I read first from the stack and I have yet to read an issue that I haven't liked. Once again Christopher Rudd has entered in the story and he has risen even higher in the ranks of Hell since we the reader last saw him. This rise in power culminated with Duma handing him the key to Hell and asking him to lead them. I had a double dose of Warren Ellis in this shipment. Besides his sporadic Planetary series that I have loved from the beginning, I also got to enjoy the first issue of his limited series Ocean. Comparing the two isn't fair so I won't do it, but I will say that both of them have their strengths and more Ellis is a good thing as far as I am concerned. No one else does science fiction in comic books as well as he does. Plus his stuff is a nice contrast to the usual superhero fare. On the other hand superhero stories done by Geoff Johns are more than enough to make me happy. In the opening installment of Green Lantern Rebirth, he made me think back to the very first issues of the title that I ever read. At that time, Hal and Ollie were on the road running into strange scenarios wherever they went. It was very much a road trip or buddy type adventure book and completely different from say what The Uncanny X-Men were doing. So much has changed since then with both Hal and Ollie having been dead being the major difference between then and now. Some have said that this book is nothing but nostalgia or returning to a status quo that isn't needed, but I am loving every page of it so far. Seeing Carol and Hal back at the air base really got to me. |
