the questioning sailor

Even though I am starting to feel like myself again sleep is still very tempting and as a result a large portion of today was spent on my couch and I didn't mind being there. To pass the time on said couch I watched the movie Lord Jim, which is based on a Joseph Conrad novel that I haven't read. As with most Conrad novels the protagonist is very troubled by some moral problem and we the reader must try to come to some better understanding of humanity and its flaws through this character. Duty was the key issue in the story and I can't think of anyone more British than Peter O'Toole to illustrate this kind of devotion to one's role in life. Of course to help the story along he falls for a native girl who never gets a name. Somehow this took away from the elevated status of the film despite its good intentions.
