some simple pleasures Two years ago on this day, I left for New Zealand and began a trip that I will never forget. Not only was it one of the few trips that I have done completely by myself, it was also the longest one that I have ever taken. I'd already been to Australia, but even though the two places are often lumped together because of their close proximity, they are not the same. New Zealand felt much more remote to me than Australia ever did and that quality truly appealed to me. As much as I love going to Europe to see the architecture and to relive history, New Zealand offered me something different. Oh, there is history there, but that wasn't the most important aspect to me. Going there was much more of a physical experience. For hours, I climbed over a glacier dressed in shorts and a light pullover coat. To this day I have yet to do anything else that equals that experience. ... Since this is the second Wednesday of the month, Mile High Comics came through with my monthly shipment of books. Up until Monday night there had been plans to go to the northern part of the state with my parents so I hadn't expected to have the day all to myself. They needed my help to get a piano from another relative. Suddenly not having to go was a welcome change. I was free to get lost in a stack of stories and I did. |
