rice salt years

Early this morning, I finished watching the movie 10 Things That I Hate About You and I can happily say that I was genuinely entertained. The answer for this response is simple. Despite the modern trappings and teen element found in the movie, the story is still Shakespeare which I adore in almost any form. Oh, the plot twists may seem forced, but at the same time the way that people react to one another is very true and that is what appeals to me the most.

Despite the continued heat I spend some time outside this afternoon reading a new book. My latest selection is Kim Stanley Robinson's book The Years of Rice and Salt, which asks the question what would the world have been like if not just a third of Europe's population was wiped out by The Plague, but all of it. Instead of having a dominant Western culture, the cultures of the East take control. A mere fifty pages into the book, I like what I have read. The author gives us a central character to follow and act as the eyes of the reader. This may grow beyond belief at the end of the seven hundred plus page novel, but that remains to be seen.

I downloaded some new music tonight ranging from Coldplay to Shakira. Neither of those two acts are new to me, but what was new was a woman named Emiliana Torrini, who came to my attention via an article in The New Yorker. A native of Iceland she shares the same accent as Bjork, but I find her voice to be more pleasing to the ear and less guttural than her more famous countryman.

An hour before sunset this evening, I made a very small discovery. Even though the heat of the day has dissipated by then, there is another element that makes riding then somewhat difficult. There are bugs everywhere along the trail and that becomes annoying very quickly. It isn't as though I were swallowing them although that possibility does exist, what bothers me is when they fly into my eyes.
