too jaded perhaps Obviously Steven Spielberg must be doing something right with his movies, because generally speaking they tend to make large amounts of money and people usually flock to see them. I, however, don't care for them that often, because I see them as being too sentimental and or simplistic. It was because of that fact that I didn't make any effort to see his movie The Terminal until today. Now having seen it, I can say that I wasn't impressed despite liking the two principal actors, Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta Jones. I didn't care one way or another if Victor ever made it out of the airport. Nor did I feel any chemistry between him and Amelia. People often criticize comic books as having simple minded plots with a clear division of right or wrong, yet for me this movie was far less intricate than most comic books that I have read. Victor had to passively fight the evil government official with the audience cheering him along. For me this was silly and not in an endearing way. Then in an effort to amuse myself, I started to watch for as many parallels between this movie and E.T. as I could and found many. Both movies have aliens as central characters. These aliens are befriended by a small group that feels the need to protect them from some higher power. Then in the end they both go home. All that was missing was a chase scene of some kind. Now having belittled his work, I must confess that I like both Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List. Nor do I mind Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raiders of the Lost Ark, 1941 and Minority Report. As for the dinosaur movies that he made, they don't interest me at all and I hope to never see them again. Going to other end of the spectrum where all sentimentality was removed, I watched a quiet little suspense and or horror movie called The Hole. My primary reason for renting it was to see Keira Knightley. I just can't get enough of her and saw that she was one of four characters in this story. From the reviews that I read, this is a movie that people either love or hate and I lean more towards the former category than the latter. Seeing people at their moralistic worst is fascinating and that was what appealed to me about the movie. The primary character augmented one emotion to the point where it caused harm to others and she had no problems with the final consequences. |
