the baltic states On PBS tonight, the latest episode of the travel program Globe Trekker amused me by showing Neil Gibson make his way through the Baltic States and Finland. Except for a reverse in direction, he ended his journey in Finland whereas that was closer to my starting point, I did the exact same route three years ago. Almost everything that he saw and did on his trip reminded me of what I had done. Vilnius, Riga, Tallinn and Helsinki were all part of my itinerary and I could almost predict what he was going to see and do in each city. I plan on returning to Europe next year, but I won't be venturing into Eastern Europe. This time I want to concentrate on Scotland and Ireland. The exchange rate might be higher, but I want something with less of a language barrier. As much as I enjoyed Hong Kong last year, I want to experience a place on the other end of the spectrum in terms of history and culture. Personally I think that I will find that in Scotland and Ireland. Not only will the people be speaking a form of English, but I suspect that summer heat won't be a problem. |
