Michelangelo sibyl from the Sistine Chapel

from penelope to ada

In the early morning hours at work, I finally finished reading Cold Mountain. I'm not sure how long it took me to read the book, but I don't regret that I did.

The jacket cover described the book as an American Odyssey and I would have to agree. The general structure was the same with a man returning home after being away at war for years. However instead of the Trojan War it was the American Civil War.

I have to confess that my knowledge of the Civil War is limited. All that I can recall are the names of some of the major battles and generals. The rest is a blur to me. I doubt that I could recite more than a few lines of the Gettysburg Address, which I never did learn in school. We seemed to memorize more bible passages and hymns than we did historical speeches which is generally the difference between a parochial school and a public one.

When I pulled into the driveway this morning, I was greeted by my downstairs neighbor. It seems that he had left his keys in the rental car that he had been using and needed a ride to work.

After I returned home for the second time, the lure of the sun kept me awake past noon for the second day in a row. It was too hard to just lie down and go to sleep when it was so nice outside. Blue sky and clouds ruled once more and I didn't want to miss any of it. Something tells me that this trend will continue when the weather gets even warmer.

Sleep seemed so much more reasonable when the cold winds blew against my windows and brought snow with them. I wasn't missing anything by sleeping. Burrowing under blankets seemed like the natural and proper thing to do. However when the inside of my house starts to approach body temperature levels at noon in summer, it will be even harder to sleep. I'll have to shift to sleeping in the early evening hours to avoid the heat or invest in some air conditioning. Of course all of this is still another three months away.
