russian science fiction Creaking metal outside my bedroom window ruined my sleep. Every time that the wind blew the awning let me know. It didn't matter how tired I felt. Four hours was all that I was allotted for the day by the forces of nature. So still half-asleep I made my way to the couch and watched a cooking program on television. I may have been awake, but that didn't mean that I felt like doing anything productive just yet. I'm not sure what makes these cooking programs so fascinating to me. Maybe I watch, because my culinary skills hover somewhere near the elementary level. For an hour or so I get to see meals that I would never be able to make unless I had someone helping me. Last week they were preparing quail and this week it was some kind of fish, neither of which will be found in my refrigerator any time soon. Oh, I like fish, but they had something far too expensive for me to buy and cook. I also think that anyone with an affinity for cooking would be disgusted with the size of my kitchen. The space does not lend itself to elaborate creations. A pizza pan just fits into the mouth of the oven and the microwave takes up the counter. Hail briefly fell as I ventured out in search of food and movies for the evening. When I got to the video store, I saw that the weather had driven others to the same conclusion. The store was packed with people just like me trying to escape from the dismal weather with the aid of some visual entertainment. While I was there I saw something that I still don't quite understand. There was a man talking on a cell phone in the video store. My guess is that he was consulting with his girlfriend or wife over movie choices, which makes me wonder why didn't she just come along with him to the store? I suppose that there is the possibility that she was sick or he had forgotten what she had sent him there to get, but I still find it odd. I personally have no desire to own a portable phone. Some women have said that they have one for purely safety reasons. They see them as something good to have in case of emergencies on the road or somewhere remote. Besides this argument for them, I don't see the appeal behind them. The last thing that I want in my car is a phone. Nor do I want someone to be able to reach me when I am walking around. I suppose that if I was more of a business-oriented person my opinion might be a little different. After surveying the new releases along the video store wall, I opted for the foreign film section and walked out with two choices, one Russian and other French. Both of them had award labels on the box, but I had never heard of either of them.
