Michelangelo sibyl from the Sistine Chapel

a serious film

Almost everything that I come in contact with bores me and the movie American Beauty was certainly no exception. For me it felt as though it were trying too hard. It wanted so desperately to be clever and insightful, but it failed. It kept shouting look at me, but I couldn't wait for it to end.

I would think that most people realize that the suburban life isn't the ideal form of life, but this movie drilled that simple lesson one more time. For me it didn't say anything that I didn't already know and the parody grew stale almost instantly. Yes, Kevin Spacey was amusing, but there wasn't enough there for an entire movie.

One would think that it would appeal to me, when the critics called it the first serious film of the season. Now when I think about it some more that really isn't saying that much. Personally I would rather have seen Run Lola Run again.
