moroccan matrix Yesterday didn't even feel like I was on vacation until it rolled around to the time that I usually have to leave for work and I didn't have to go anywhere. I could watch the clock move past that time and not feel rushed or late. That one moment in time made the whole day for me. I love it when simple things like that can make me happy. A few days ago the trees in both my back and front yard caught up with the rest of the neighborhood in terms of the season. Suddenly everything was a vibrant yellow amidst surrounding blocks of bare trees, but now all of it too has fallen to the ground. Nature has set the stage for snow, but that has yet to happen here. Of course on the other side of the Great Lakes they already did get snow, so Wisconsin can't be that far behind. Watched Hideous Kinky as I sorted through some paperwork this morning. An Englishwoman and her daughters are living in Morocco in the 1970's, where she is trying to find herself, but her daughters would rather not be a part of it. I wouldn't call the film complex, but it does make the idea of living in an exotic place seem less appealing. Of course having Kate Winslet starring in it made it that much better for me. Ever since I first saw her in Heavenly Creatures years ago I have liked her and was happy to see that this was finally on videotape. Then later in the afternoon I saw The Matrix for the first time and despite all of the hype that bothered me so much from months ago, I have to confess that I liked it. Oh, without a doubt it is a true geek boy wet dream with all of its special effects, but it still worked for me on some levels. Now this might be an unfair critcism, but the concept of everything that we see around us is really a computer generated simulation is nothing new. I've seen that idea done years ago in other places and I am sure that it will be done again by someone else, because most science fiction ideas get recycled over and over. Like most people it was the highly stylized martial arts fight scenes that appealed to me the most. None of it can possibly compare to the real thing, but it is still fun to watch. For me it isn't until you have actually been kicked by a true martial arts master that you can truly appreciate good fighting technique. The gun sequences made me laugh out loud though with the government building lobby scene being pure cartoon. I kept grunting guns in my best dumb guy voice. For some reason guns never ever impress me, because I feel that people who like to use guns are weak. Anyone can pull a trigger. It proves nothing in terms of strength or discipline. Another part of the movie that made me laugh out loud was that the agents reminded me of Conan O'Brien trying to look cool by wearing shades. I will admit that it would have been nice to see it on the big screen.
