Michelangelo sibyl from the Sistine Chapel

to a joyous land

I thought about trying to explain why I chose the music that I did yesterday, but I can't. I'll let people read into it whatever they want to see or believe.

After seeing more than one of what I thought were bad movies in the theater, I went back to renting them this week and I found one that was worth my time. In fact I liked it so much that I wanted to watch it a second time as soon as it ended. The Sweet Hereafter had been recommended to me over a year ago, but I never got around to seeing it until today.

Now that I've said that I liked the movie, I can't say why. It isn't a happy movie, but that isn't what I look for in a good movie. Nor was it something epic in scale. The best way that I can describe the film is by saying that it was disturbingly quiet and compact.

Even though it seemed small in scope, the amount of emotional force within the film affected me deeply. Wave after wave of emotion came through the images and the music. It was something that made me think about people and the way that they interact, which is something that has been missing in my life.

So often the motivations of other people are a mystery to me.

After seeing the film, I'll never think about the Pied Piper of Hamelin the same way again.
