more travel plans

Sunday mornings are wonderful. I walk out of work into the bright light knowing that I don't have to be back for days. Yes, Sunday mornings are my Friday nights. Actually I think that my mood started to improve as soon as the night began and definitely got better with each passing hour.

The second shift guy and I had our usual discussion about the company and work in general. It seems that he is applying for a full time position in another department, but isn't sure whether or not he wants it. Then if he doesn't get the position he might leave in June rather than work here through the summer. I guess that everything boils down to the fact that he is getting tired of working every Friday and Saturday night and not getting paid that much for his efforts, which I can understand and I am sure the company does as well. I'm curious to see what happens and how my department deals with him leaving.

As for me, I'm not going anywhere until after I get back from my trip, which is something that I finally got some more informaion about from my parents. I would have asked my brother, except that he was sleeping while I was there. It seems like it will be just the two of us going to Europe, because my brother is giving up on his friend. Not only did I learn that it will be just the two of us, but I think that we have the perfect package lined up for our trip, so it might not matter that we lost our would be guide.

The package plan sounds pretty reasonable and should eliminate most if not all of our travel confusion. Hitchhiking is not something that I wanted to rely on that much while I am there and with this package to guide us that won't be an issue anymore. Nor does it sound like the people who are organizing the trip will be riding us to do certain things. Now I am hoping that they live up to their promises.

The other reason for my visit was to drop off some books that I had found in my recent cleaning. Seven years ago I worked for a small book publisher, where they handed out free books to their employees every week. Ten books was the limit and we were under strict orders not to sell them. All of this sounds wonderful except for the fact that we only published childrens' books. Oh, these were quality books, but I didn't have that much use for them at the time. Then my parents said to just get some anyway. Now that my niece is three years old, I finally have someone that can appreciate them.

My reading has started to pick up again. Besides reading The New Yorker as soon as it arrives in the mail, I'm switching between Annie Proulx's Close Range and T. Coraghessan Boyle's Water Music. Something about the dark humor of Proulx really appeals to me. Most of her characters are so downtroden that I can't help but feel for them. Some reviews call her stories depressing, but I don't think that is qute fair to her. Yes, none of her characters are from the traditional hero mode, but the flaws are what make them so interesting.

...

Through the astronomy site that I visit every day, I learned that Pluto is the only planet in our solar system that has not been photographed by a passing spacecraft. For some reason I thought that Voyager or some other craft had been there already, but I guess not.
