speaking for her

Before I left work this morning, I managed to persuade a coworker to rethink what he had been saying about Nicole. It wasn't as though I threatened him. I just told him how hurt she was by what he had said and how much it bothered me. By his own admission this person has a habit of making negative comments about people in our department, but this time I thought that he had gone overboard.

As to what makes me a better judge of character than him when it comes to people, I can't say. I mean there is the remote possibility that I am wrong. What I can say is that every time that he put her down, it made me wince and I had to say something.

The way that I see it, people have a hard enough time getting along at work without people continually commenting on one another all of the time. I am sure that it is very amusing for the person playing devil's advocate, but I can only stomach so much of that behavior. Personally I don't see that point in it and like Nicole I found it to be very juvenile. Yes, I suppose that I have a very naive view of humanity, but I do care about Nicole so I wanted the rumors to stop.

The role of peacemaker is not a new one for me. Quite often that was what I did in high school among my odd group of friends.

Two more weeks of work and then I'll begin my whirlwind tour of Europe. In the span of a month, my brother and I will go through eight different countries and I have no idea how much we may or may not miss at the speed. I also know that this isn't fair to the various countries, but at the same time I'm not brave enough to quit my job to stay there for months. All that I can do is try to get as much as I can out of the trip and make an attempt to get back sometime in the future. Ideally I would like to be able to go on a yearly basis, but that might not be possible.

As for planning the trip itself, I still need to talk with my brother this weekend to finalize a few more details, but essentially we are ready to go.
