lunar eclipse evening Deluded me thought that there would be a crowd of people standing outside tonight staring at the orange red moon, but I was wrong. There was a couple on their second story deck, a guy walking his dog and myself. Sigh. Okay, to be fair I wasn't near a planetarium, I was just in the park behind my house, but the guy walking his dog didn't even look up at the sky. As to how a dog taking a shit could be more fascinating than an eclipse is beyond me. Maybe if it had been extremely cold outside and he was in a hurry I could understand, but he was there for fifteen minutes calmly watching the canine sniff and go in circles. Now I realize that this will happen again this November, but this was the first full lunar eclipse in three years that was visible from North America. What happened to a sense of wonder? I guess a natural version of shock and awe doesn't have the same impact as it did say a hundred years ago. ... On the pop culture front, Carter found himself in Africa and that seemed to be a good way to end the season. When there was a commercial, I ran outside to check the progress of the moon turning orange. An episode of Late Night with Conan O'Brien done clay animation style is a good thing. The in-the-year-2000 segment with Mr. T. will stay with me for a long time. Plus David Bowie in clay form also makes sense to me on some strange level. |
