catching big fish Tim Burton and his work has never really held that much appeal for me, but I still went this afternoon and saw his latest movie Big Fish. As with most creative people, Burton has some motifs that he likes to use over and over in their art. This meant that there was a circus, a metal hand with knives and other gadgets coming out of the fingertips and a neighborhood where all of the lawns look the same. I guess that that is fine, but there was nothing in the movie that stayed with me. None of the characters meant anything to me and the imagery wasn't that striking. Maybe I was expecting too much, but the whole thing felt hollow to me. When the credits started to roll and I was getting ready to leave, something made me sit up and pay attention. Accompanying the words on the screen was the voice of Eddie Vedder. Apparently Eddie must like Tim or vice versa, because I can't remember the last time that Pearl Jam provided music for film soundtrack. The song was simple and probably the best part of the movie for me. |
