an italian monica

Yesterday I was caught up in a world where the population was kept subdued by watching torture scenes. Today I watched a coming of age story set in an unnamed Sicilian town during World War II. To put it another way a Doctor Who episode gave way to the Italian film Malena.

I confess that my main reason for renting Malena was to see Monica Bellucci in something other than the final two Matrix movies. Now having said that I can still say that it was a good film. It may have been slightly sentimental if not stereotypical, but it was levels above most of what is playing on the screens right now here in America.

Oh, I had one more thing to say about the Doctor Who Vengeance on Varos DVD and that would be that the commentary on the disc was great. Hearing Colin, Nicola and another actor talk about the episode made it better for me. They all know that the show has flaws, but they can also point out the charm behind it and remind me why the show has endured for so long.

It almost seems that with each passing hour there is less and less snow on the ground. My prediction is that by Sunday there won't be any left. All that we will have is brown lawns and slop. Yes, there is a definite downside to spring in my opinion. Then again a large amount of the snow that was lying around had taken on that oh so attractive gray hue from dirt and debris.

Before I fell asleep for the day, I read a few issues of The New Warriors that I had been part of an online auction that I won months ago. It was a randomly selected one hundred issue lot so I wasn't expecting them to be in there. In fact, if I hadn't won that auction I doubt that I would ever have read any issues of the book, because it stopped being printed years ago and there was little to draw it to me.

Fabian Nicieza has an annoying tendency to write in any many characters as possible into one book. Now when I say as many as possible, this usually means in excess of twenty. For me that kills any hope of individual character development and makes his books one plot twist after another. The New Warriors fits that description perfectly.

I can see why I stopped reading anything from Marvel at that time. Their motto at the time was quantity over quality and that was enough to drive me away from their product.

Today will be my last slow day until next week. Starting with my return to work tomorrow everything will shift into high gear and there won't be any free time to read comic books or watch movies. Work and school will compete for control and hopefully I'll be able to get some sleep before next week Wednesday when the ride comes to a brief stop.
