southern hemisphere life

When I watched the film Powaqqatsi this afternoon it didn't have quite as big of an effect on me as Koyaanisqatsi did when I first saw it. Maybe that has something to do with the fact that I knew what to expect this time around. I had seen the style once before and it didn't seem as unique to me in the second installment. Plus I wasn't quite sure what the director was trying to say with Powaqqatsi. It wasn't until I watched an interview with him that the meaning became more clear to me.

Usually I don't need someone to explain a film to me, but with Powaqqatsi I was lost. In Koyaanisqatsi the contrast between the natural world and what man has wrought with his technology was obvious to me. The issues in Powaqqatsi were much more subtle and I had no idea it was focusing just on life in the southern hemisphere. All that I saw was people working in the fields and other places that I couldn't recognize. For example the open put mine at the beginning of the film was a mystery to me and I didn't understand what I was watching.

Now my next step is to see the third and final film in the trilogy.

I've found some new music and I have the Apple iTunes store to thank for my discovery. The Welsh singer that calls herself Jem is my new find and I may have to purchase a copy of Finally Woken. At the moment, my favorite track has to be the one called They.
