lady jane grey For some time now, I have been fond of historical dramas on the screen despite any blatant inaccuracies they may have in them. Prime examples would include the Cate Blanchett film Elizabeth, Peter O'Toole's The Lion in Winter and Schindler's List. All three of them affect me in some way or another. Now I am thinking of adding another to that select list. Lady Jane featuring a very young Helena Bonham Carter in the title role has some interesting moments in it. From what I have read the most glaring lie and or falsehood presented in the movie is the romance between Jane and Guilford. As I understand it from various sources, the two of them were indeed married, but once Jane was placed in the Tower by Mary, Jane never saw Guilford again. The final romantic moment seen in the movie never happened. I guess that I can overlook that scene and a couple of others, because I still love the way that England was torn apart over religion. I don't approve of what the two sides did to one another, but at the same time I am amazed at the passion that these people had for their beliefs. One tends to forget that religious fervor does not belong solely to the Middle East or certain groups in America. |
