another year ends

This was a memorable year for my family. I can't remember all of the highlights that happened over the year, but a few things to come to mind.

Four days into the year my brother and his wife welcomed their daughter into the world. Her debut doubled the grandchildren count for my parents. Then in February my sister came home after spending a year in Iraq. Even now it is hard to comprehend her being there for so long. Through her stories I have a vague sense of what she experienced, but none of that can match being there. I have no idea how that would have changed me as a person. She, however, seems to be moving ahead with her life quite nicely by purchasing her first house. At the end of March I went to Hong Kong for the first time in my life. This was the first step in a long held dream of mine. I may not have made it to mainland China, but at least I can say that I have been to Asia. I also know that I need to go back there. Finally, there was a week of family fun this summer at the lake property that had been in the family for as long as I have been alive. Our reason for being there was simple. We knew that it would be the last time that everyone would be able to get together before my brother left for Iraq.
